The Signs of Prophethood: Miracles and Fulfilled Prophecies
Indeed, all praise is for Allah. We praise Him, seek His help, and His forgiveness. We seek refuge with Allah from the evil within ourselves and from the consequences of our wrong actions. Whomsoever Allah guides, none can misguide; whomsoever He leaves astray, none can guide. I bear witness there is no deity worthy of worship but Allah alone without partner, and Muhammad ﷺ is His servant and Messenger.
Part One: The Miracles of the Prophet ﷺ
Brothers, today we wanted to talk about the evidences of the Prophet ﷺ.
1. The Splitting of the Moon (Shaqq al-Qamar)
[Quran,54:1,"The Hour has drawn near and the moon was split ˹in two˺."]
The Quraysh challenged the Prophet ﷺ to perform a miracle. In response he pointed to the moon and, by Allah's will, it split into two distinct parts, visible to all present. This event is corroborated by multiple companions, including Anas ibn Malik and Abdullah ibn Masud, and is recorded in multiple mass transmitted ahadith in Sahih al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim, and more.
The event was witnessed by a large number of people, including both believers and skeptics. The Quraysh, who had challenged the Prophet ﷺ to show a sign, were present. Despite witnessing the miracle, some accused the Prophet of sorcery. To verify the event, they consulted travelers from distant areas who confirmed seeing the split moon.
2. Night Journey and Ascension (Isra and Mi'raj)
[Quran,17:1,"Glory be to the One Who took His servant ˹Muhammad˺ by night from the Sacred Mosque to the Farthest Mosque whose surroundings We have blessed, so that We may show him some of Our signs. Indeed, He ˹alone˺ is the All-Hearing, All-Seeing."]
In a single night, the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ journeyed from Masjid al-Haram in Mecca to Masjid al-Aqsa in Jerusalem (Isra), and then ascended through the heavens (Mi'raj), meeting various prophets and ultimately receiving the command for the five daily prayers.
According to multiple narrations such as Ibn Ishaq, Ibn Hisham, al-Tabari, etc., on his return from the heavenly ascension, the Prophet ﷺ passed by a caravan from the Quraysh tribe that had lost one of their camels. He drank from their water supply and poured the remainder onto the ground. Upon his return to Mecca, he recounted this incident to the Quraysh, describing the caravan and its circumstances in detail. The Quraysh were skeptical and awaited the caravan's arrival. When the caravan returned, they confirmed the Prophet's account, including the lost camel and the missing water, thereby validating his miraculous journey.
Remember, in these times it would have been physically impossible for the Prophet ﷺ to know what happened with a caravan in the middle of the desert that is traveling to Mecca like this without phones, radios, or any of the technology we have today.
3. The Weeping Date Palm
The Prophet ﷺ used to deliver sermons while leaning on a date palm trunk. When a pulpit was constructed, and he began using it, the trunk cried out like a child. The Prophet ﷺ descended, embraced it, and it calmed. This was something witnessed by all of those in attendance!
[Hadith,Bukhari,"The Prophet used to stand by a tree or a date palm on Friday. Then an Ansari woman said: 'O Allah's Messenger! Shall we make a pulpit for you?' He said, 'If you wish.' So they made a pulpit for him, and when it was Friday, he proceeded towards the pulpit. The date palm cried like a child! The Prophet descended and embraced it while it continued moaning until it calmed down."]
4. Water Flowing from His Fingers
During the expedition of Hudaybiyyah, the companions faced a shortage of water. The Prophet ﷺ placed his hand in a container, and water began to flow from between his fingers, sufficient for all present to drink and perform ablution.
[Hadith,Bukhari,"I saw Allah's Messenger when it was the time for the Asr prayer and the people searched for water but could not find any. A small quantity of water was brought to Allah's Messenger. He put his hand into the vessel and ordered the people to perform ablution with it. I saw water flowing from under his fingers, and the people performed ablution with it."]
5. Milk from a Dry Sheep
When Abdullah ibn Masud was a shepherd, the Prophet ﷺ asked him for some milk. Ibn Masud replied that the sheep were dry. The Prophet ﷺ stroked the udder of one, and it filled with milk, which they drank.
[Hadith,Bukhari,"We used to consider miracles as Allah's blessings, but you people consider them to be a warning. We were with Allah's Messenger on a journey, and we ran short of water. He said, 'Bring the remaining water.' They brought a vessel containing a little water. He placed his hand in it and said, 'Come to the blessed water, and the blessing is from Allah.' I saw the water flowing from between the fingers of Allah's Messenger, and we heard the food glorifying Allah when it was being eaten (by him)."]
6. Protection from Enemies
During the Hijrah (migration) to Medina, the Prophet ﷺ and Abu Bakr took refuge in the cave of Thawr. Allah caused a spider to spin a web and a dove to nest at the cave's entrance, misleading the Quraysh trackers.
[Quran,9:40,"If you do not aid him, Allah certainly aided him when those who disbelieved drove him out ˹of Mecca˺ and he was only one of two. While they both were in the cave, he reassured his companion, 'Do not worry; Allah is certainly with us.' So Allah sent down His serenity upon the Prophet, supported him with forces you could not see, and made the word of the disbelievers lowest, while the Word of Allah is supreme. And Allah is Almighty, All-Wise."]
Then when Suraqah ibn Malik caught up to the Prophet ﷺ but his horse's legs failed 3 times until he pledged not to harm him. In the Battle of Badr there was the handful of dirt thrown that got into the eyes of every enemy and the angels assisted (even the pagans attested to this).
7. Multiplication of Food
On several occasions, the Prophet ﷺ prayed over small quantities of food, which then sufficed large groups of people. One notable instance was during the Battle of the Trench, where a small meal prepared by Jabir ibn Abdullah fed a thousand men. A miracle witnessed by 1000+:
[Hadith,Bukhari & Muslim,"When the Trench was dug, I saw the Prophet ﷺ in a state of severe hunger. So I returned to my wife and said, 'Have you got anything, for I have seen Allah's Messenger in a state of severe hunger.' She brought out for me a bag containing one Sa' of barley, and we had a domestic animal which I slaughtered. Then I cut the meat into pieces and put it in a cooking pot. I returned to Allah's Messenger and said to him secretly, 'O Allah's Messenger! I have slaughtered a she-animal of ours, and we have ground a Sa' of barley which was with us. So please come, you and another person along with you.' The Prophet raised his voice and said, 'O people of the Trench! Jabir has prepared a meal, so let us go.' Allah's Messenger said to me, 'Don't bake your dough till I come.' So I came and Allah's Messenger too came, proceeding before the people. When I came to my wife, she said, 'May Allah do so-and-so to you.' I said, 'I have told the Prophet of what you said.' Then she brought out to him the dough, and he spat in it and invoked Allah's blessings in it. Then he proceeded towards our earthenware meat-pot and spat in it and invoked Allah's blessings in it. Then he said (to my wife), 'Call a baker to bake with you and keep on taking out from your earthenware meat-pot, and do not uncover it.' They were one thousand persons who ate and took their fill, and even then, some food remained. Then the Prophet said, 'Eat and present to others as the people are struck with hunger.'"]
[Hadith,Bukhari,"My father had died in debt. So I came to the Prophet and said, 'My father left unpaid debts, and I have nothing except the yield of his date palms; and their yield for many years will not cover his debts. So please come with me so that the creditors may not misbehave with me.' The Prophet went around one of the heaps of dates and invoked (Allah), and then did the same with the other heap. Then he sat on it and said, 'Call your companions (i.e., the creditors).' He paid them in full and what remained was as much as had been paid to them."]
8. Prophecies That Came True
The Prophet ﷺ made numerous prophecies, many of which were fulfilled during his lifetime or shortly thereafter. There are actually so many that have been authentically recorded and came true that I will dedicate the second half to as many as we have time for today, inshaa' Allah.
9. The Quran: The Everlasting Miracle
Beyond physical miracles, the Qur'an stands as the eternal miracle of the Prophet ﷺ. Its linguistic excellence, profound meanings, and prophecies continue to inspire and guide.
[Quran,2:23,"And if you are in doubt about what We have revealed to Our servant, then produce a sûrah like it and call your helpers other than Allah, if what you say is true."]
Part Two: The Fulfilled Prophecies
In the first half, we reflected on the miracles granted to the Prophet ﷺ; now, let us turn to the prophecies he conveyed—each fulfilled precisely—affirming his truth and sealing his mission.
1. Martyrdom of Omar ibn al-Khatab
[Hadith,Ahmad,"Omar asked the Prophet, 'Will I be one of the people of Paradise or Hell?' The Prophet said, 'You will be martyred.'"]
2. Martyrdom of Uthman ibn Affan
[Hadith,Ahmad/Tirmidhi/Ibn Majah,"O Uthman! Perhaps Allah will clothe you with a shirt, and if the hypocrites want you to take it off, do not take it off for them."]
This was understood to mean that Uthman would be given the leadership (the \"shirt\") and that he should not relinquish it under pressure, which he did not, when besieged by the Khawarij.
3. Martyrdom of Ali ibn Abi Talib
[Hadith,Tirmidhi/Ahmad,"The most wretched of people is the one who will strike you here (pointing to his forehead) and your beard will be stained with blood."]
Ali was struck with a poisoned sword on the head by the Khariji Ibn Muljam while going for Fajr prayer. His blood flowed down into his beard, exactly as prophesied.
4. Natural Death of Abu Bakr as-Siddiq
[Hadith,Bukhari & Muslim,"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ climbed Mount Uhud with Abu Bakr, Omar, and Uthman, and it shook beneath them. So the Prophet ﷺ said, 'Be firm, O Uhud! For upon you is a Prophet, a Siddiq, and two martyrs.'"]
5. Emergence of False Prophets
[Hadith,Bukhari,"The Hour will not be established until nearly thirty liars appear, each one claiming to be a messenger of Allah."]
6. Conquest of Jerusalem and more
[Hadith,Bukhari,"Count six signs that indicate the approach of the Hour: my death, the conquest of Jerusalem, a plague that will afflict you, abundance of wealth, a trial that will afflict every Arab, a truce with the byzantines..."]
The other points were directly fulfilled also with the plague during the time of Omar, then the abundance of wealth during Uthman where it was hard to even give Zakat, then civil wars during the time of Ali, and then a treaty with the Byzantines under Muawiyah.
7. Conquest of Constantinople
\"Verily, you shall conquer Constantinople. What a wonderful leader will her leader be, and what a wonderful army will that army be!\"
This prophecy was fulfilled in 1453 CE when Sultan Mehmed II led the Ottoman army.
8. Conquest of Persia and the Wearing of Khosrow's Bracelets
[Hadith,Muslim,"You shall wear the bracelets of Khosrow."]
The Prophet ﷺ predicted the conquest of Persia and that Suraqa bin Malik would wear the bracelets of Khosrow. This prophecy was fulfilled during the caliphate of Umar ibn al-Khattab when Suraqa was given the bracelets of the Persian emperor.
9. Predictions about Ammar ibn Yasir
[Hadith,Bukhari,"Alas! Ammar will be killed by the rebellious group."]
Fulfillment: Ammar ibn Yasir was killed at the Battle of Siffin (657 CE), fighting alongside Caliph Ali against Mu'awiya, whose side was labeled the rebellious group.
10. Death of Fatimah
[Hadith,Bukhari,"You will be the first of my family to join me."]
Fulfillment: Fatimah passed away about six months after the Prophet's death.
11. Killing of Husayn at Karbala
[Hadith,Ahmad,"I entered upon the Prophet ﷺ one day, and his eyes were shedding tears. I said, 'O Prophet of Allah, has someone angered you? Why are your eyes weeping?' He said, 'Rather, Jibrīl was here earlier and informed me that al-Ḥusayn will be killed by the bank of the Euphrates.'"]
Fulfillment: Husayn ibn Ali was tragically martyred at Karbala (680 CE).
12. Death of the Prophet ﷺ Himself
[Hadith,Bukhari,"Jibril would review the Qur'an with me once every year, but this year he has reviewed it twice. I think this portends my passing."]
13. Fire in Hijaz Illuminating Busra
[Hadith,Bukhari & Muslim,"The Hour will not be established till a fire will come out of the land of Hijaz, and it will throw light on the necks of camels at Busra."]
This was fulfilled with the volcanic eruption near Madinah in 1256 CE.
14. Division into 73 Sects
"The Jews split into seventy-one sects, the Christians into seventy-two sects, and my Ummah will split into seventy-three sects."
This division has been observed throughout Islamic history.
15. Signs of the End Times
The Prophet ﷺ gave numerous signs, many of which we see today:
- Barefoot and poor bedouins competing in the construction of tall buildings
- Women will outnumber men and become dominant in society
- Markets will become close and widespread
- Sudden death will become widespread
- People will decorate mosques
- Voices will be raised in the mosques
- The truthful will be considered liars, and the liars truthful
- Knowledge will be taken away (by the death of scholars)
- Sexual immorality will be committed openly
- Drinking wine will become common and widespread
- People will compete in luxurious home construction
- Islam will become like a stranger and return as it began
- Women will be clothed yet appear naked
- Divorce will be widespread and lightly taken
While there were physical miracles granted to the Prophet ﷺ by the permission of Allah—such as the splitting of the moon, water flowing from his fingers, and food multiplying in his hands—perhaps even more powerful and enduring are the hundreds of prophecies he gave, many of which were fulfilled in his lifetime or shortly after, and others we are witnessing unfold before our very eyes. These were not vague guesses or general statements, but precise, clear predictions—about rulers, battles, martyrs, social conditions, and even technological realities—that no human could have foretold without revelation from the All-Knowing.
These prophecies are not merely stories of the past—they are living signs that the message of Muhammad ﷺ is true. They prove that he spoke not from desire, but from wahy (revelation). When we see the world rushing toward the very events he warned us about 1400 years ago, it should not shake our faith—it should strengthen it. These fulfilled prophecies are a mercy for the believers, a warning for the heedless, and a hujjah (proof) against those who reject. So let us reflect not just on what the Prophet ﷺ said, but on what has come true—and what that means for our future, our sincerity, and our readiness to meet Allah.
We ask Allah to make us firm upon His straight path, to guide us and not let us go astray, to have mercy on us and forgive us.
Whatever good was said in this khutbah is from Allah alone, and whatever mistakes or errors are from myself and from Shaytan. I ask Allah to forgive me and you for any shortcomings.
I say these words of mine, and I seek forgiveness from Allah for myself and you all. Seek His forgiveness—indeed, He is Most Forgiving, Most Merciful.
